Why water restrictions could continue into the winter

As autumn arrives and temperatures begin to fall, many people assume that the risk of drought has passed and water restrictions have come to an end.

However, for some parts of the UK, that isn't the case. Several Temporary Use Bans, also known as hosepipe bans, remain in place and could continue into the winter months if water resources don't recover sufficiently.

Many restrictions were introduced during the summer when the UK experienced exceptionally hot and dry conditions*. While cooler weather might be on the way, water supplies won’t recover overnight. Reservoirs, rivers and groundwater sources can take months of rain to replenish, particularly if rainfall levels remain below average.

When will the restrictions end?

There is no set timeline for when restrictions will be lifted.

Each water wholesaler will assess local conditions and determine if, and when, water resources have recovered enough to meet demand without placing additional pressure on supplies. Until then, restrictions are likely to remain in place to help protect essential water resources and support longer-term resilience.

What can businesses do to help protect water resources?

Increasing pressure from population growth, climate change and changing weather patterns means it is more important than ever that we use it wisely.

For businesses, understanding where, when and how water is used can uncover significant opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs and strengthen resilience during periods of water stress.

A few simple steps can make a big difference:

  • Carry out a water audit to understand where water is being used.
  • Identify and repair leaks as quickly as possible.
  • Review water-intensive processes and look for efficiency improvements.
  • Encourage water-saving behaviours across your workforce.
  • Monitor consumption regularly to identify unusual usage patterns early.

Taking action today can help reduce demand on local water resources while also delivering operational and financial benefits for your organisation.
