A typical primary school pupil uses around 3,500 litres of water each year* - which is enough to fill around 44 baths per pupil, per year. During the summer holidays, schools typically use very little water. So, when our Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology flagged unusual water consumption at a primary school in the South Ayrshire area of Scotland during a summer break, we knew something wasn't right.
We quickly alerted the school and investigated the cause. Thanks to the AMR data, we identified a running tap in one of the school's toilets. While it was a relatively simple issue to resolve, if it had gone unnoticed throughout the holidays, it could have resulted in significantly higher water costs.
Had the unusual consumption been caused by a leak or burst pipe, the financial and operational implications could have been far more serious.
