Saving water isn’t just about doing your part for the planet; it can also lead to significant cost savings and support your sustainability goals. By implementing water-saving strategies, you can reduce your costs while contributing to a healthier environment. Here are some actionable ways to cut down on water usage and reap the benefits:

1. Track your water consumption

Understanding how much water your business uses and where it’s being wasted is crucial for effective water management. There are lots of ways you can do this:

  • Check your bill, where you’ll be able to see how much water you’re using over a period of time to help you understand how much you’re using (and don’t worry, our team of experts keep an eye on this too for any unusual spikes in consumption!)

  • Install automated meter readers (AMR), to constantly monitor your water usage by taking a meter reading every 15 minutes. These readings are automatically transmitted to our online portal, providing access to data and insights at the click of a button.

  • Use our free Intelligent Water Management service, which provides cutting-edge technology and expert insights to help you track and reduce your water consumption.  You have access to full visibility of your site consumption data, benchmarking analysis, historical trend data and proactive consumption alerts. It’s available for all customers through our My Business Stream portal

  • Book a water audit. If you’d like additional support to understand your water consumption and where you can make savings, our expert team have extensive knowledge in identifying and delivering water efficiency measures, offering both virtual and on-site water audits to help you better understand how and where to save water. They can give you advice on what devices you should install, and they can also fit them and tell you how much water, money and CO2 you’ll be saving!

2. Install water-efficient devices and upgrade your appliances

Replace old taps, toilets and urinals with water-efficient models such as low-flow taps, dual-flush toilets and water-saving showerheads. We’ve partnered with Aqualogic to offer a range of water saving devices through our online shop that help you save money and reduce water use. You can install most of them yourself without the need for specialist equipment or plumbing experts. Check it out here

Upgrading appliances like dishwashers and washing machines to water-efficient models can also further reduce your water consumption while also lowering your energy costs. It’s a win-win!

3. Fix leaks

A water leak can be costly to your business so it’s important it’s spotted and repaired quickly and efficiently. Conduct regular inspections of your plumbing system and address any leaks promptly. Fixing leaks is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to conserve water and save money.

4. Raise employee awareness, provide training and share your success

Your employees play a vital role in your water conservation efforts. Educate them on the importance of saving water and provide practical tips for reducing usage in the workplace. Simple actions like turning off taps when not in use, reporting leaks and using water-efficient practices can add up to significant savings. Don’t forget to track your water-saving achievements and share them with your employees, stakeholders and customers. Demonstrating your commitment to sustainability can enhance your brand reputation and inspire others to follow suit.

5. Use eco-friendly cleaning products and methods

Traditional cleaning methods often require large amounts of water. Switching to eco-friendly cleaning products and methods can reduce water usage while being kinder to the environment. For example, microfiber cloths can clean surfaces effectively with minimal water and waterless cleaning solutions are becoming increasingly popular.

6. Implement water recycling or install a rainwater harvesting system

Recycling water is an excellent way to reduce wastage. Greywater systems can treat water from sinks, showers and appliances, making it suitable for non-potable uses like irrigation or flushing toilets. Installing a rainwater harvesting system allows you to collect and store rainwater for use in landscaping, cleaning or cooling systems.
